Student Wellbeing Working Group

Fosters collaboration to improve mental health and wellbeing support across IARU’s student communities.

Background and Purpose

Established in 2025, the Student Wellbeing Working Group (SWWG) is a collaborative forum within the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), aimed at fostering knowledge exchange, innovation, and joint initiatives to enhance student wellbeing across member institutions. Recognising the growing complexity of student mental health and wellbeing needs globally, IARU member institutions identified the need for a coordinated, evidence-informed response that is adaptable across diverse university contexts. The working group brings together experts, researchers, practitioners, and university leaders to share best practices, develop projects, and support the wellbeing of students. The SWWG is guided by four core objectives: facilitating knowledge sharing, developing joint initiatives, promoting evidence-based approaches, and enhancing institutional capacity. The group specifically focuses on collaborative learning on student wellbeing policies, interventions, and research. They also aim to leverage global expertise and resources, promote student mental health and resilience, and enhance capacity through peer support and professional development. Current focus areas include thematic workshops that explore university-wide approaches to wellbeing from an intercultural and interdisciplinary perspective. Other key areas of focus are collaborative research and publications to measure the impact of wellbeing interventions, as well as advocacy engagement to position IARU institutions as global thought leaders in student wellbeing.

Whole University Approach to Student Wellbeing framework for IARU

A multi-phase project to strengthen student wellbeing across member institutions will include: joint data collection to benchmark key indicators; co-development of an adaptable framework; publication of the framework; and its dissemination at the group meeting in June 2026. Following dissemination, the group will initiate a process to assess the impact of the framework’s implementation across participating institutions.
