Professor Gao has long been engaged in research on molecular magnetisms and their applications in quantum information technology and biomedicine. He has made original contributions to molecular solids with magnetic-electric ordering, molecular nanomagnets, and quantum-coherence manipulation of molecular magnetisms.
He has received the Second Prize of the State Natural Science Award three times, as well as the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He serves as an Advisory Board member of Chemical Science, Editor-in-Chief of Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers, and Associate Editor of National Science Review.
With extensive experience in higher education administration, he has held a number of leadership positions, including Vice Dean and Dean of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at Peking University; Provost, Vice President, and Executive Vice President of Peking University; President of South China University of Technology; and President of Sun Yat-sen University.
